Learn Italy: New York's Newest School for Italian Studies

Learn Italy, headquartered in Frosinone and noted for its study abroad program offerings which include Italian language study and cultural tour programs in Frosinone and Rome Italy, has arrived in the the United States. On February 23, 2010, "Learn Italy New York" held its official inauguration at its headquarters located on the 10th floor of the New York Language Center, at 226 West 37th Street in Midtown-Manhattan. According to the school's founder and director, Massimo Veccia,"The success of this event was a confirmation of our foresight and determination paying off and allowing us to play an active part in the expansion of the Italian language and culture world-wide." Following a long process and strong promotional campaign by internet, press, and social networking, that has reached not only across a large part of the United States, but over to Italy, Learn Italy is moving successfully on its first steps toward becoming a multicultural reality in the "Big Apple."
Thanks to the presence of respected personalities from the world of politics and cultural institutions, by Italians residing in the US, and thanks to presence of those who had the simple yearning to learn about Italy and its language, an inaugural event of a school for the teaching of Italian was transformed into a truly cultural and social evening. Of particular importance to this event, including from the institutional point of view, was the presence of the Italian Consul of New York, Francesco Maria Talò, the Italian Consul of Newark, NJ, Andrea Barbaria, Counselor Augusto Sorriso of the General Counsel of Italians Living Abroad, who jointly expressed enthusiasm and particular interest with regard to this project as a "bridge between North America and Italy." Other dignataries in attendance were Peter Caruso, representing the National American Confederation of Calabrian Associations, Silvia Mangione and Ilaria Costa, representing the Italian-American Committee on Education, and Alfio Russo, Director of the Education Office of the New York Italian Consulate.
However, above all Massimo Veccia and his staff from Italy comprised of Roberta Sabatini, Jeanne Outlaw Cannavò, and Valeria Vannoli were particularly honored by the numerous people who came to the inaugural event to attend the three complimentary Italian lessons, coordinated Learn Italy New York’s Didactics Director, Sergio Stefani and instructor Monica Rossi Miller. Learn Italy's staff in Italy, Joseph Cannavò, Director of PR, Veronica Lisi, our social and networking Coordinator, and Poala Stirpe, didactic Coordinator, while not present were also a vital part of the success of the Learn Italy New York inauguration. The enthusiasm and warmth with which the students were received and immersed in a completely new reality, represented without a doubt the strength of a language school, that thanks to innovative and specific methods and resources for teaching, distances itself from the outdated methodologies of the past. The reply was so strong and the requests so numerous, that it was necessary to organize additional complimentary lessons to the day's activities.

Language was not the only highlight of the event, also culture: throughout the inauguration a continuous video presentation about contemporary Italy was shown, and an exhibit of Italian language books, which included three publications from Pulp Editions Publishers of Frosinone: "The Testament of Don Rodrigo," by Stefano Testa, "Frosinone, Yesterday and Today," by Giancarlo Spaziani and "Un Uomo Marrò" by Massimo Savona. In addition upcoming events scheduled at the LINY's cultural center include a photograph exhibit by Stacey Courtney intitled "Fragments." Learn Italy, in fact, was created with the primary objective being to create and organize cultural and artistic events, opening a door of opportunity to many Italian and Italian-American talents here and in Italy. With this in mind, the New York Learn Italy facilities have been placed at the complete disposal, for any and all events or meetings promoted by the Italian Consulates in the US, the Ministry of Tourism, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, by the Region of Lazio, or the Province of Frosinone.

Learn Italy is proud to be recognized by the Regional Council of Lazio and by the Province of Frosinone, and has established partnerships and/or memberships with the following Italian and American Institutions: New York Language Center, the Carmel S. Morina and Deptford Lodges of OSIA in Gloucester County NJ, The Italian-American Chamber of Commerce of South-east Miami, The South 9th Street Businessman Association in Philadelphia, the Modern Language Association, and the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Language. As such, Learn Italy is now a tangible reality that continues its growth in the cultural and artistic world that is New York.
